Empirical Formula

What does an empirical formula indicate?
A empirical formula gives the lowest whole number ratio of the atoms in the compound. It shows the kinds and the lowest relative count of atoms or moles of atoms in formula units of a compound.



What steps do you use to determine empirical formula?
1. Drop the percent sign and change it to grams.
2. Then convert to moles using dimensional analysis.
3. Make "ugly formula.
4. Divide by smallest number of mols from ugly formula.
5. Divide if necessary.
